Synecdoche, New York

3

A theatre director decides to stage the story of his life

A city within a city, a play within a film, a life within a life… Synecdoche, New York is a beautiful, overblown head-fuck.

Charlie Kaufman’s directorial debut stars Philip Seymour Hoffman (opposite a raft of female talent) as an anxious theatre director who builds a set in a hangar and stages a play replicating his own life.

Dense and deliberately abstruse, it both frustrates and rewards with an abundance of ideas and inventiveness.

Hint: The film starred Michael J Fox as accidental time traveller Marty McFly.
