Coming-of-age comedy with a hint of Truffaut

There’s a hint of Truffaut-meets-Woody Allen about Gary Winick’s (Bride Wars) coming-of-age comedy.

Oscar (X2’s Aaron Stanford’s debut) is an unctuous 15-year-old who speaks fluent French, quotes Voltaire and finds girls his own age vapid. Instead, he lusts after glamorous stepmum Sigourney Weaver, only to wind up in bed with her best friend, Bebe Neuwirth.

The underage sex is treated lightly, and there are some diverting scenes (a squirming dinner bubbling with secrets), but the film and its lead feel a bit too pleased with themselves.
