A chance encounter between a struggling mum and a gambling addict

A chance encounter between struggling mum Minnie Driver and gambling addict Jeremy Renner has terrible consequences for both in a glum 2007 indie whose bleakness extends to its colour-starved visuals.

By mirroring this meeting with a later one on Death Row, debutant writer/director Charles Oliver strives to make a case for restorative justice over the traditional, eye-for-an-eye variety.

Yet he does this in such a disingenuous fashion it is hard to summon sympathy for either of the leads, let alone the annoying brat who becomes a sacrificial lamb.
