We've had ET. We've had Jaws. Hell, we've even had The Color Purple. But for many it was a case of Indiana Jones And The Invisible DVDs. When would Steven Spielberg finally sate fans' craving to see his rip-roaring Indy trilogy on silver-spinner format? Well, all good things come to those who wait and, with Indy 4 hovering on the horizon, beardy moguls Spielberg and George Lucas have finally got their act together. But how do the fedora-sporting archaeologist's adventures hold up?
Better than ever. Indy 1 may have been clumsily retitled Indiana Jones And The Raiders Of The Lost Ark (why?), but it remains a unique, thrilling joyride with more memorable scenes, stunts and gags than you can flick a whip at. Last Crusade is almost as fine, boasting a tank chase to die for and a movie-pilfering turn from Sean Connery, his Indy Senior supplying a dashing streak of humour. And even if Temple Of Doom remains the weakest of the three, it still throws up some (whip) cracking adventure and expert set-pieces.
DVD Extras:
Think you know all there is to know about Indiana Jones? Think again. Three full-length Making The Trilogy docs fill a fourth disc crammed to the brim with goodies. Want to see Tom Selleck's first screen test? Vintage behind-the-scenes footage? Ford clowning around on set? It's all here - - plus interviews with everyone (even Denholm Elliott and River Phoenix get a look-in, and they've been dead for years). Shorter featurettes on the sound, FX, music and stunts plug the gaps, while Spielberg's detailed dissection of the end of Crusade is a tantalising taste of the commentary he may one day provide. One thing's for sure: this package is worth the wait. As Indy says, ""It's not the age, honey. It's the mileage"."
