Taking its cue from a Chinese proverb that says happiness, pleasure, sorrow and love are the cornerstones of life, this pretentious thriller has Forest Whitaker, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Brendan Fraser and Kevin Bacon embody these concepts in a four-part story made up of interlocking plotlines. Andy Garcia is the film’s common denominator, while each part comes with a brooding voiceover, one baffling flashback and a preposterously symbolic finale. Emile Hirsch, fresh from his Speed Racer car crash, gets the best of it as a thrill-seeking chatterbox. Paltry extras.
