A pacier and gorier remake of the 1979 original, out for a slice of of the same box-office pie cut by The Grudge and The Ring Two? Pretty much. But praise be for Melissa George, who not only reminds us of the days she tantalised our adolescent loins in Home And Away, but also saves this haunted house hokum with a convincing effort as Kathy Lutz, wife to George (Ryan Reynolds) and mother-of-three. Together, they move into a big, spooky-looking dream-home, only to discover the previous occupants were murdered a year before. George spirals into a psychological collapse that mirrors the original killer's, Kathy tries to stop him offing everyone, Indian burial ground, yada yada yada...
DVD Extras:
It's more preposterous than petrifying, but the excellent extras, including the team's justifications for tweaks they made to the original, are dense and diverting. Also, the documentary on the actual homicide of 1974 is easily more scary than the film itself.
