Back in 1960 Billy Wilder's high-profile rom-com was derided for its dark undertones, and for perhaps blabbing a little too much about the secrets of corporate America. Jack Lemmon is at his peak as the typically jittery company guy who tries to boost his promotion potential by hiring his apartment out to superiors and their mistresses. Things get uncomfortable when he falls for his boss' side-dish Fran (Shirley MacLaine). It's heavily dated - - check out the sexual politics - - but still a lesson in how to blend a little shade into light comedy.
DVD Extras:
Subtitles, scene access, original trailer. Great film, murky transfer. Sure, it's 40 years old, but even the most casual technophiles will soon be muttering about the shimmering, the squashed ratio, and why they didn't just stick with their VHS copy. Maybe some movies are just too far gone to benefit from a DVD polish; maybe the disc makers just couldn't be bothered.
