The Arbor

A tragic family drama documenting the life of playwright Andrea Dunbar

The Arbor review

The troubled life and early demise of Bradford playwright Andrea Dunbar, movingly explored through archive footage, excerpts from her plays and personal testimonies relayed through lip-synching actors, forms one half of Clio Barnard’s audacious docu-drama.

The other focuses on the harrowing history of her daughter Lorraine, revealed to have inherited both her mother’s dexterity with language and her addictive personality.

Brilliantly played by Manjinder Virk, she emerges as a character as tragic as any Dunbar conceived.
