From the wistful score to the budget FX, everything about this straight-to-DVD tale of a disillusioned Texas rancher reeks of true-life drama. Everything except the bit where Charlie Farmer (Billy Bob Thornton) – an ex-astronaut who gave up after his dad’s suicide – builds a space rocket in his barn. The improv-style scenes and understated turns from Thornton and Virginia Madsen as his wife make for an engaging if low-key watch until a last act that’s enjoyable only for its audacity.
