The Barbarian Invasions

3

Denys Arcand's belated follow-up to 1986's The Decline Of The American Empire centres on Remy (Remy Girard), the first film's lefty, lecherous academic, who now lies dying in hospital, where he's visited by his estranged son (Stephane Rousseau) and some good friends. Together they begin to heal old wounds and, helped by heroin, salve new ones.

It's a simple film about death and reconciliation at heart, but Arcand occasionally overeggs the pudding. And while it may have won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film, you can't help but feel it's been overrated on second viewing.
