The Basketball Diaries

A pre-Titanic Leo DiCaprio cuts loose his rougher side in this crisply played biopic of New York writer/musician Jim Carroll. Carroll is a promising high-school basketball player who embarks on the skiddy spiral of drug abuse. He narrates his diary entries in standard teen-poetry (""Rain clears the streets of the silent armies"") until the inevitable rock-bottom, as he's reduced to turning tricks for his fix.
