The Battery

4

Two slackers versus the zombie apocalypse

Written, directed, produced by and starring Jeremy Gardner, this hugely likeable $6,000 debut is a zombie movie for lovers and haters of the genre alike. It is to Z-movies what Monsters is to creature features, with the walking dead little more than a wobbly backdrop to the shifting dynamics between two bromantic slackers (Gardner and Adam Cronheim) on the road to nowhere.

Smart but never smart-arse, The Battery tidily swerves between comedy and drama as it traverses Malickian landscapes in miniature, then makes an unexpected pit stop for a terrifically claustrophobic third act. Small movie, big discovery.
