Howard Hawks adapts Raymond Chandler's twisted classic, keeping many of the plot's convoluted turns, but also diverting the attention from the story's complexity by playing up the now-legendary sexual tension between Humphrey Bogart as cynical gumshoe Philip Marlowe and Lauren Bacall's casino-haunting rich girl. The result is noir at its sultriest, and while the dialogue and characters have all the colour of Chandler's original, you can't help pining for the next bout of charged verbal sparring.
