Producer Val Lewton’s noir horror sees Boris Karloff perfectly cast as a murderous cabman holding the medical establishment of 1830s Edinburgh to ransom via his Burke & Hare-style corpse racket.
There’s eyeball-rolling lunacy in spades, but also a pleasingly sick sense of humour that sees Greyfriar’s Bobby meeting the business end of Karloff’s shovel.
As Henry Daniell’s tormented Dr Macfarlane grapples with his conscience as the bodies pile up, it plays out like a gothic precursor to Cape Fear.
