The Browning Version

Michael Redgrave enthrals as a schoolmaster at the end of his career who realises he’s been a failure as a teacher (his pupils despise him), as a husband (his wife’s carrying on with one of his colleagues) – hell, as a human being in general. Adapted by Anthony Asquith from Terence Rattigan’s play, it’s let down by a schmaltzy send-off, but is still a class above Mike Figgis’ ’94 version.
