Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman confront terminal illness with atypical joie-de-vivre in Rob Reiner’s uneven travelogue tragi-caper. Devilishly charming as ever, Jack gets the lion’s share of laughs, leaving the worldly wisdom to hospital room-mate Freeman. Jumping from a plane offers both some respite, but viewers might struggle to stomach the ride as it totters between silly japes and schmaltz. Among the extras, writer Justin Zackham suggests other “things to do before you die”. Catching a rare interview with Nicholson on Blu-ray should make the list.
