Unsettling yet ultimately sluggish drama

Charlize Theron is haunted by a guilty secret in Babel writer Guillermo Arriaga’s directing debut.

Too slow and downbeat to deliver on its Oscar pedigree promise, but Kim Basinger is great as an adulterous wife whose mysterious death echoes down the generations.
