The Caiman

2

Nanni Moretti (The Son’s Room) wraps his satirical wail at Italian ex-PM Silvio Berlusconi in a film-within-a-film that smothers the director’s gift for melodrama. Centred on a floundering B-flick producer who lands a Berlusconi-skewering script, The Caiman’s effective personal moments sit uneasily with its political soapboxing. A success at home due to its timely subject matter, Moretti’s comic polemic doesn’t translate well. It lacks the slowburn eloquence of his finer work, and has too many culturally specific references for UK viewers, with no extras to supply context.
