Based on the misapprehension Pitch Black's anti-hero Riddick (Vin Diesel) is strong enough to benchpress his own movie, writer/director David Twohy's space oddity was meant to inspire a fresh trilogy. Hard to see the ideas stretching that far, given they can't even cover this shoddy sequel, whose evil empire and freedom-loving rebels almost make you miss The Phantom Menace.
Diesel grunts on regardless, mumbling Arnie-grade bon mots while providing just enough muscle to keep the action sequences moving. Even his brand of charisma can't stop Riddick becoming mired in mythology and self-importance before finally imploding.
