The Concert

A spurned conductor gets the chance to redeem himself...

Le Concert review

Sacked 30 years ago for refusing to rid the Bolshoi Orchestra of Jews, conductor-turned-cleaner Andrei (Aleksei Guskov) hears opportunity knocking when he intercepts an invite to perform in Paris.

Frantic efforts to round up the old gang leave Radu Mihaileanu’s musical dramedy at risk of becoming slapstuck.

Thankfully, the boozing and shouting fade away as the story sobers up for the raison d’etre: a climactic concert that works voiceover, emotional revelation and flashback into the action without breaking the spell.
