Unsurprisingly, things went a bit quiet for Kevin Reynolds after he directed (or tried to direct) Waterworld. Okay, there was Samuel L Jackson thriller 187, but that was a low-key affair. Good to see, then, that he’s capable of making a hugely enjoyable, swashbuckling action-adventure like The Count Of Monte Cristo.
Reynolds stays true to Alexandre Dumas’ novel, and teases an impressive performance out of Jim Caviezel as the good man who becomes embittered by his quest for vengeance after his best bud (an entertainingly sneery Guy Pearce) has him locked up for a crime he didn’t commit. Sharp-edged fun.
