Freddy Gale (Jack Nicholson) is a grief-ridden jeweller who lost his daughter to a drunk-driver six years ago. John Booth (David Morse) is the killer, fresh out of prison and wracked with remorse. They wrestle inner demons by talking slowly, waving guns (at each other) and having miserable sex (not with each other).
DVD Extras:
Commentary by director Sean Penn, actor David Morse and crew.Nicholson and Morse are on powerful form but Penn's second directorial outing is as ponderous as a Galapagos turtle, only transcending heavy-handed symbolism in the final 20 minutes. The commentary is equally arduous, with Morse and Penn competing to see who can be the most ramblingly pretentious.
