The Deadly Companions

3

After spending the late ’50s directing TV cowboys ‘n’ injuns serials (The Riflemen, Gunsmoke), Sam Peckinpah delivered his feature debut: a solid genre outing with a few dark moments. The plot focuses on forlorn ex-army officer Brian Keith, who decides to escort Maureen O’Hara’s feisty dame through the bowels of Apache country, having accidentally blown her son to bits while trying to stop a robbery. Overall, it’s a diverting if relatively gentle harbinger of mad, bad Sam’s later grisliness. No extras.
