Stanley Kramer's 1958 polemic against racial intolerance is a case of a simple story well told. Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier are escaped convicts, chained together and on the run from the law. United by the need to survive but hindered by their skin-deep hatred of each other, the pair must overcome their anger and distrust if they're to dodge recapture.
DVD Extras:
Trailer.Over 40 years on, The Defiant Ones still packs a powerful, poignant message, and both stars are totally convincing as initial hostility melts to grudging respect and eventually fondness. The lack of extras is unforgiveable, though - surely there's something interesting to say about a movie that not only tackled the race issue head on but acted as a precursor to contemporary action-buddy movies?
