The Devil's Backbone

4

Set in an orphanage during the Spanish Civil War, The Devil's Backbone is a wonderfully subtle ghost story. If you liked Blade II, wait till you see what Mexican helmer Guillermo Del Toro can do when he's concentrating on atmosphere instead of box-office.

DVD Extras:

Behind-the-scenes featurette, special effects sequence breakdown, storyboard to screen sequences, trailer. The stylishly assembled 20 minute featurette is hugely illuminating and the storyboard-to-screen comparisons are almost as good. But it's the breakdown of two effects sequences - a falling bomb and a ghostly appearance - that are most eye-catching. Peeled apart layer by layer (CGI, live action, artwork) and then glued back together, they're guaranteed to evoke an "Aaah, that's how they do it" response.
