The Devil's Rejects

2

Ditching the overblown sideshow psychedelia of its gurning sibling House Of 1000 Corpses, this grainier sequel makes for uneasy viewing - although not necessarily in the ways director Rob Zombie intended. There's an odd mash of styles afoot: a faintly tongue-in-cheek homage to the stereotypical B-nasty, it's peppered with all the sadistic brutality you'd expect from a family of inbred serial killers on an interstate jaunt. However, for all the deranged face-cleaving antics of the Firefly clan, it's actually relatively tame in terms of onscreen gore. Alas, Rejects lacks the brains of similarly contradictory fare like Texas Chain Saw - deleted scenes assume a range of sub-Beavis And Butt-Head titles ('Marshmallow Ass', 'French Tickler'), while the performances (particularly from Zombie's missus Sheri Moon) are painfully over-egged. On the upside, a killer hick soundtrack and more extras than you could shake a dismembered arm at - including a Making Of that unmasks Zombie as a sensitive, intelligent filmmaker - are a smarter affair.
