The English Patient

3

In this World War Two-set tale of doomed romance, Ralph Fiennes is the eponymous hero, supposedly overwhelmed by his passion for the newly wed Katharine (Kristin Scott Thomas), with able support from Willem Dafoe and Juliette Binoche.

DVD Extras:

None.Watching this three years after it won nine Academy Awards makes it somewhat easier to assess its merits. Sure, the production values are gorgeously worthy and John Seale's cinematography frames the majestic sweep of the story with great skill. But neither the characters nor the story live up to the splendour of the settings. The disc itself offers nothing more than the now-standard instant scene access and interactive menus. DVD is the best format on which to own something as visually powerful as The English Patient, but that can't excuse the lack of extras.
