The Exorcist: 25th Anniversary Edition

4

It may be 25 years since The Exorcist first had punters fainting in the aisles, but this relentlessly realistic depiction of a little girl's rape by both doctors and a demon has lost little of its unsettling power. Like The Blair Witch Project, it's a perfect example of favouring atmosphere over gore and building slow-burn fear rather than churning out the usual shocks.

DVD Extras:

The Fear Of God documentary, six TV spots, eight trailers (including some for other horror titles), interviews with cast and crew, the original ending, an introduction by director William Friedkin, separate commentaries from Friedkin and author William Peter Blatty, sound tests, sketches and storyboards. The Exorcist has never looked so good, and the extras are both copious and comprehensive. Anyone serious about horror simply has to possess this heavenly release of Friedkin's hellish spine-tingler.
