The Good Father

2

A fathers’-rights melodrama

Crude issues-wrangling gives way to keener character dissections in a fathers’-rights melodrama from writer Christopher Hampton (Atonement) and director Mike Newell. Anthony Hopkins flexes pre-Dr Lecter fury as Bill, a divorced dad raging at mums who take custody; Jim Broadbent is gentler as another separated dad Bill goads into legal action. The end stretch subtly complicates matters, exposing Bill’s culpability, though not before reductive slants on feminism and ill-nourished female roles have blunted both debate and drama beyond repair.
