The Gospel According To St Matthew

This Pasolini classic is so reverential towards the Messiah mythos, it's enough to make you wish for some Last Temptation Of Christ revisionism - or at least for someone to tell Jesus he's "a very naughty boy". Still, it's hard not to admire the Italian maestro's take on the story, captured in luminous black-and-white and set against a fantastically fresh soundtrack which blends Bach, Congolese folk music and blues standards. It's less a robust drama than a poetic monologue about faith, but a dubbed Enrique Irazoqui is so intense as JC that the preaching is always riveting.
