Curious rather than compelling, Thaddeus O'Sullivan's pre- and post-World War Two melodrama always seems less than the sumof its parts. For players in a film all about passion and infidelity - Paul Bettany is having an affair with his wife's sister (Helena Bonham Carter) - the actors display little emotion. A film for the mind, not the heart.
