The Hitcher

3

In the days before he slid into a comfy, straight-to-video mire, Rutger Hauer managed to scale the lower peaks of '80s popularity thanks to two cracking roles: Blade Runner's psycho android Roy Batty and The Hitcher's psycho thumb-waver John Ryder.

Problem is, freshman director Robert Harmon doesn't give Hauer enough screen time to make the most of his icy, charismatic malevolence, ditching the nightmarish atmospherics in favour of so-so action theatrics. Should have stuck to the deserted roads of Nevada and the chilling psychological mind games.
