With 1994‘s Hoop Dreams, Steve James made one of the great docs of all time, and this urgent piece is a worthy notch on his CV.
On Chicago’s streets, a group calling themselves CeaseFire have quietly been creating a more fruitful solution to gang violence than incarceration by police (whom we barely see). Instead, cool heads with gang backgrounds, but now older and wiser, intervene; the stories of these ‘interrupters’ are as fascinating as the feuds are disturbing.
But their very success in finding a half-solution to a problem once thought permanent, makes for moving drama.
