A textbook example of a comedy striving too hard to be both smart and funny, Ricky Gervais’ ‘what if’ fantasy – set in an alt-world where he’s the only man who can lie – begins as an ingenious Groundhog Day-like chuckler.
Midway through, alas, it gets all metaphysical as his schlubby loser inadvertently invents religion, too grand a subject for what is in effect an extended skit overly dependent on awkward star cameos.
