Despite a poor showing at the box office, The Iron Giant is easily one of the best family cartoon films of the past few years. Sure, the animation's not quite up to Mouse standards, but the script, packed with sly references to '50s sci-fi B-movies and Reds-under-the-bed Cold War paranoia, easily compensates.
DVD Extras:
The Bird yak-track is sharp but surprisingly sober, while the Making Of featurettes leave no frame unscrutinised. Best fun, though, is the look at how the Vin adapted his usually dulcet tone to nail the robot's man-child roar.
