The James Stewart Collection

4

A curious collection, this – worthwhile if you don’t have the titles, but hardly something to distract the devoted Stewart or Hitchcock fan. Their collaborations are the masterpieces here: Rear Window and Vertigo. The latter has the trailers, Stewart intro and Obsessed With Vertigo doc from the release already available; the former has an excellent short featurette with screenwriter John Michael Hayes (whose audition for Hitch saw the pair go to dinner and get lashed), but not, according to the PR (a finished disc wasn’t available at time of going to press) superb hour-long doc Rear Window Ethics. Bizarre. Hitch’s explorations of voyeurism and regret are teamed with Harvey, Winchester ’73 and Destry Rides Again. Certainly, the box set showcases Stewart’s versatility – rage-fuelled maniac as well as dew-eyed charmer – but the films have been released before and Stewart fans will crave a package which places ’73 alongside his other masterful works with Anthony Mann: Where The River Bends, The Naked Spur, The Far Country and The Man From Laramie – only the last of which, scandalously, is available on UK DVD.
