The Killing Fields

4

American journalist Sydney Schanberg (Sam Waterston) travels to Year Zero Cambodia to investigate Pol Pot's vile regime. There, he meets revolutionary Dith Pran (Haing Ngor - who genuinely survived torture under the Khmer Rouge) and, in doing so, uncovers the greatest story ever told. Apart from that one about Jesus, obviously.

DVD Extras:

Trailer, Cambodian history timeline, director's filmography. This is the film which promised Hollywood that "the British are coming!", so you'd have thought Universal could come up with more than the standard trailer, scene access and filmography gubbins. But whatever the shortcomings of either the release or the movie, they're minor compared to the dual tragedy of Ngor's murder (he was shot by gang members outside his LA home in '98) and the fact that Hollywood never again found a way to tap the talent of this extraordinarily brave man.
