Peter Bogdanovich adapts Larry McMurtry's novel, set over a year (1951-52) in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it Texan town. Lovingly textured and beautifully acted by the likes of Jeff Bridges, Cybill Shepherd and Ellen Burstyn, it's a stunningly shot, poignant rites-of-passage drama with a keen eye for social and sexual mores.
DVD Extras:
Featurette, trailers, The Last Picture Show: A Look Back documentary, filmographies. The short featurette throws up some interesting insights but the real highlight is the one-hour documentary. Bogdanovich has plenty to say - about his affair with Shepherd, his tyrannical approach to shooting the movie - but Bridges and Shepherd get a word in too.
