The London Nobody Knows

Adapted by Geoffrey Fletcher from his own book, this quirky doc has an urbane James Mason strolling around corners of the Big Smoke that were obscure enough then and have now, for the most part, completely vanished. The script is flowery, but it’s great to see the actor exploring Victorian loos, egg-smashing plants and a pre-trendy London. Douglas Hickox’s short film Les Bicyclettes De Belsize tries to bring some Jacques Demy-style musical romance to Hampstead, but is sadly twee enough to rot your teeth.
