Get past the mullets, the power ballad soundtrack and the New Romantic fashions and Joel Schumacher's 1987 teen vampire flick is ageing well. Part of that is down to the sexy blend of bad lads, bloodsuckers, camp comedy and carnage, but the quality of the cast plays a huge part too.
Schumacher could expect a quality turn from Dianne Wiest as the divorced mom moving with her two kids to the California town of Santa Carla, but he really struck it lucky with the teenage cast. Okay, so you can quibble about vamp-hunting geeks Corey Feldman and Jamison Newlander. But Jason Patric as the lad bitten by the night life? And Kiefer Sutherland as charisma-charged vamp leader David? They simply eat up the screen. The Lost Boys wouldn't be half the film without them.
DVD Extras:
Schumacher's droll commentary overdoes the hyperbole, but it's worth trawling through for on-set anecdotes. There are damn few such stories elsewhere, though. The main doc focuses more on casting and concept than filming nitty-gritty, while of the five mini-docs only make-up exposé Vamping Out offers any real glimpse behind the cameras. The other extras are throwaways, worth watching if you want to see how badly Coreys Haim and Feldman have aged, but not if you're looking for anything from Sutherland or Patric.
