Ostensibly a cosy biopic of portrait snapper and part-time inventor William Friese-Green (Robert Donat), this Boutling Brothers opus courts controversy by painting our man as the undisputed creator of the moving image. Still, historical liberties don’t ruin a quaint (if hackneyed) curio that portrays Friese-Green as a mad scientist, misunderstood genius and forgotten hero. Cameos from Laurence Olivier, Richard Attenborough, Peter Ustinov and even a teenage Ronnie Kray. No extras.
