The Matador

3

As unbalanced as Pierce Brosnan's hitman on the verge of a nervous breakdown, Richard Shepard's film never quite gels. Yet its best moments - basically all scenes between Brosnan and Greg Kinnear (as the mild-mannered salesman Brosnan odd-couples up with) - are achingly enjoyable.

The extras are almost as patchy. The seven-minute Making Of documentary is okay if you want to marvel at just how much Shepard - bad 'tache, bouffant hair, fondness for open-necked shirts - looks like his lead character, but it's hopeless for on-set anecdotes. For those you have to go to the commentaries on the 11 deleted scenes or the two chat-tracks for the main feature. The group one with Kinnear, Brosnan and Shepard is best - packed with answers to questions you didn't know you had. For instance? How do you get a small dog to pretend-hump Brosnan's leg on cue? Simply smear the ex-Bond's ankle with peanut butter...
