The Mission: Special Edition

Deep in 17th-century South America, a Jesuit priest (Jeremy Irons) and a reformed slave trader (Robert De Niro) hope to `make Christians' of an Indian community 'only to find their mission threatened by blood-hungry Portuguese colonialists.

Dealing with greed, genocide and sacrifice, Roland Joffé's Palme d'Or-winning picture is depressing, prescient viewing. Earnest in tone, melancholic in mood, it's hardly Friday-night fare, but if your tear ducts aren't tingling as its credits roll, check your soul.
