The Mothman Prophecies

3

Point Pleasant, West Virginia, and the locals are fruitcaked about something. Lured into the mire is reporter John Klein (Richard Gere), whose enquiries uncover a Fortean smörgåsbord of Mothmen, precognition and weird howls coming out of the sink. Minus the odd throwaway jump, the fear lies between the gaps in Mark Pellington's thriller, a hushed panic piece amplified by a groaning soundscape of discordant, malfunctioning boiler effects. Mood-wise, X Files marks the spot, but give it time - there's a satisfyingly urgent climax waiting at the end.

DVD Extras:

With its fatuous reconstructions and belchy American voiceover, Search For The Mothman is an inconclusive but agreeably tacky doc. Meanwhile, the junket gladmouthing sees Richard Gere droning on about meditation. Boooring! Ask him the hamster question!
