Sean Connery and Christian Slater dressed in habits probably isn't many people's idea of a grand night in. Yet this medieval murder mystery impresses through its nightmarish recreation of the Dark Ages. Connery is the monk investigating a 12th-century monastery; playing Watson to his Holmes is fresh-faced Slater, who's appalled when they uncover sins that would make the Marquis De Sade blush. Not a patch on Umberto Eco's novel, but the atmosphere is memorably infernal.
DVD Extras:
French director Jean-Jacques Annaud dominates the extras with a yak-track and two behind-the-scenes docs. He's a genial guide with some grimly hilarious anecdotes about almost roasting Connery alive in the bonfire scenes.
