Barry Levinson's slightly batty baseball fable makes little sense but is crammed with memorable images. Prodigy Roy Hobbs (Robert Redford) out-pitching a famed major league batter by the side of a railroad track, Hobbs' downfall at the hands of a beautiful woman, his return 14 years later armed with a bat made from a tree felled by lightning... With a hugely impressive cast (Robert Duvall, Glenn Close, Kim Basinger), it's a mystic and mystifying curveball of a movie.
