The Only Son

1

Fascinating ongoing release of Ozu's extant movies...

Another fascniating double in the BFI’s ongoing release of all Ozu’s extant movies. As before, a post-war classic is coupled with an earlier rarity – and as so often, the focus is inter- generational family tension.

In Late Spring, a widowed father resorts to subterfuge to persuade his daughter to get married.

The Only Son, Ozu’s first sound film, sees a widowed mother visiting her son in Tokyo and finding his life is far from how she imagined it. Both bask in Ozu’s quiet, compassionate intensity.
