Josey Wales (Clint Eastwood), a Confederate soldier traumatised by the murder of his family, refuses to surrender at the end of the American Civil War. Pursued by Unionist troops, he heads for Texas, picking up a motley bunch of fellow travellers along the way. Can Wales find redemption? Or is he doomed to be a man of violence for the rest of his life?
DVD Extras:
None.Originally released in 1976, this weird but wonderful Western is widely seen as both a plea for tolerance within the USA and a reflection on the trauma suffered by soldiers during the Vietnam War. Definitely among the strangest of Eastwood's movies (the first half is gritty and dark, the second almost dreamlike) it's also one of his best. The transfer to disc is first-rate, but, once more, a lack of any extras proves to be a let-down.
