One of the '70s more significant disaster movies, The Poseidon Adventure could teach Titanic a thing or two: most notably the importance of a tight script and good dialogue. After all, the ensemble cast (Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, Roddy McDowall, Shelley Winters) do have to talk occasionally, even if they are concentrating on maintaining grimaces as they escape a capsized liner. But equally, Ronald Neame could have done with seeing Jim Cameron's movie - his feeble direction lets tension seep away like bilgewater.
