"Man wanted", says the sign outside the roadside diner, and drifter Frank (John Garfield) needs a job. But from the moment Frank encounters his boss' femme fatale wife Cora (Lana Turner), it's clear there's murderous, adulterous trouble ahead. Forget Bob Rafelson's overwrought remake starring Jack Nicholson - Tay Garnett's 1946 take on James M Cain's novel is the real deal: a taut, economical noir with tremendous lead performances.
DVD Extras:
The John Garfield Story features contributions from Martin Scorsese, Joanne Woodward and Richard Dreyfuss as it profiles an actor who's all too often forgotten these days. Tracing his rise from a tough upbringing in New York, it convincingly presents Method man Garfield as a precursor to the rebellious likes of Brando and De Niro. An intro to Postman from film historian Richard Jewell, plus a trailer and image gallery, complete a solid package.
